The Next Breakthrough: ION+ Eclipse Shaped Cutter Technology

The ION+ Eclipse cutter features a unique concave geometry with optimized size, depth, and positioning from the chamfer. It leverages the latest ION+ technology, which provides customized thermal-abrasion and impact resistance tailored to specific applications. Rigorous validation through state-of-the-art drilling laboratories ensures its robustness, with pressurized and atmospheric single cutter tests preceding full-scale bit testing.

This ingenious design is elegant but very effective, enhancing rock destruction mechanisms, optimizing cuttings, and minimizes frictional heat. These performance enhancing attributes result in reduced reactive bit torque, enhancing tracking capability allowing drillers to smoothly steer in the curve and landing in the pay zone. The higher rock failing efficiency ensures effective weight-on-bit (WOB) transfer in those three-mile and four-mile laterals. In addition to more effective drilling, drill bits outfitted with Eclipse cutters drill longer intervals with better dulls.

ION+ Eclipse has consistently outperformed benchmarks across various U.S. regions: vertical applications in the Permian Basin, extended laterals in the Bakken, and curve and Springer laterals in Mid-Con. Recent successes in Canada further highlight the technology’s exceptional robustness and reliability. We are expanding testing on a global scale and are excited about the potential of record setting runs.
